PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is a non-governmental, independent, non-profit entity working on a global level, which promotes the sustainable management of forests to achieve a social, economic and environmental balance.
PEFC aims to ensure that the world's forests are managed in a responsible manner, and that its multitude of functions are protected for present and future generations. To do this it counts on the cooperation of owners and companies in the forestry sector, who by pledging their commitment to the certification of forests and industries are ensuring the sustainability of the sector.
PEFC provides the framework for the implementation of common regulations agreed internationally, to all of its national certification systems, and to forestry managers and timber processing companies.
Forest products (wood, paper, cork, mushrooms, resins, scents...) certified by PEFC give consumers a guarantee that they are buying products from sustainably managed forests. By choosing PEFC, buyers can help to combat illegal harvesting and encourage the main functions that forest resources have such as:
Sustainable forest management has been defined as the "management and use of forests and forested land in such a way and with such intensity so as to maintain its biodiversity, productivity, vitality, potential and capacity for regeneration, so as to be able to meet, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions at a local, national and global level, without causing damage to ecosystems". .
Sustainable forest management tries to reconcile the exploitation of forests with the maintenance of biodiversity and forest ecosystem functions.
Sustainable forest management integrates key sustainability principles, being environmentally responsible, economically viable and socially beneficial.
It is environmentally responsible because it ensures that the exploitation of timber helps to maintain biodiversity, productivity and ecological processes of the woodland. .
It is economically viable because it implies that forest operations are administered so that they are profitable, but without the economic benefits generated being at the expense of forest resources, the ecosystem or affected communities.
And it is socially beneficial because it contributes to the local populations, as well as society as a whole, allowing them to enjoy the long term benefits of the woodland and providing incentives to communities to retain the forest resources and become involved in the management plans.
What is a forest certified in sustainable forest management?: It is a forest which follows a voluntary procedure by which an independent third party (the certification authority) provides a written guarantee that forest management is in line with the principles of sustainability.
